In a world of escalating energy costs and dwindling natural resources, public buildings should set a positive environmental example to the communities which they serve. As the most public of our public buildings, libraries are an effective venue in which to educate a community about smart sustainable design practices and strategies.
Green design should not be restricted by a project size or budget. Any library can and should be built and operated sustainably. Simple techniques, materials and operational strategies can limit expenses, reduce resource and energy use, provide improved indoor air quality, reduce maintenance costs and provide a safe, clean and sustainable library environment.
