Ismael Arrayga, Conference Systems Support

Ismael is a Senior Library Assistant and has worked for the Cerritos Library
since 1997. He is currently majoring in Computer and Electrical Engineering
at Cal- State Long Beach. Before becoming a Senior Library Assistant, Ismael
worked in various departments and projects. His work has included computer
setup network setup and trouble shooting, server setup and maintenance,
copying and printing equipment, audio visual equipment, light controls,
electrical, programming--basically anything that has a wire or motherboard,
staff scheduling, volunteer program and even building a half scale T-Rex
replica for the city parade. "No job is too big" and when given an
assignment the answer is always, "No problem, I'll get it done". In his
spare time he does computer and network consulting and restores vintage
Porsches.

Craig is a Project Manager/Architect in the San Luis Obispo office of BFGC Architects Planners Inc. He has 13 years experience on educational and public projects; he received has Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and studied architecture abroad at Kobenhavn's Universitetet, in Copenhagen Denmark.
Craig is the father of two boys and is active in the community. He currently is a member of school site council and both the district and site budget committees, as well as being an advisor to the Orcutt Youth Arts Foundation.

A retired Health Care Administrator, Don is a consultant for strategic planning and board development among nonprofit organizations. In his career, Don was a CEO for Los Angeles County hospitals; Regional Director of Hospitals, Public Health and Mental Health, Los Angeles County; CEO Alameda County Hospital; and Vice-President Accreditation, Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Locally, Don is a Board member for Six Rivers Planned Parenthood, Humboldt Senior Resource Center, Redwood Community Action Agency, the Humboldt Library Foundation and the North Coast Health Alliance.

Donna is an Assistant Regional Administrator, responsible for overseeing seventeen libraries and one bookmobile for the East Region of the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Previously she was a Youth Services Coordinator with the County Library for eighteen years and also worked as a reference librarian at the Oceanside Public Library.
Donna has a B.A. degree in English from San Diego State University and received her MLS from the University of Southern California in 1978. She is a native of California and has a daughter attending college. She enjoys reading, going to the movies with her husband and shopping with friends.

Before launching Library Communication Strategies (LCS) with Linda Wallace, Peggy was Associate Executive Director for Communications for the American Library Association. She decided to become a librarian while a sixth grader working in the Marguerita School Library in Alhambra, California. She is a graduate of the University of California, Riverside, has an MLS from Rutgers, worked for the Orange County Library and San Francisco Public Library before joining the ALA staff about 100 years ago.

Dave is the principal and creative director of Summit Design and has over 38 years of design background, playing key creative roles on a great variety of themed experiential environments. His design and management expertise comprises such areas as theme parks, family entertainment centers, "experience" libraries, water parks, resorts, and specialty retail and restaurant environments.
Deborah Barrow, Watsonville Public Library Team Leader

Deborah has been the Director of the Watsonville Public Library for the past
7 years. Apart from planning an innovative new main library in a
150,000 sq.ft., multi-use building, Deborah and her staff at Watsonville
have also overseen the conversion of a fire station and its garage into
a branch library and after school homework center.
A native of Southern California, Deborah also has served several years as the Library Automation Manager for Chula Vista Public Library and was the Project Manager for the South Chula Vista Library building project. She also worked in information systems in the private sector. Without question, building public library buildings and planning their services are most rewarding to her.

W. Troy Beckman serves as President of the Lodi Public Library Foundation Board of which he has been a member since 2001. He is a fifth generation Beckman residing in Lodi where his pioneer family settled in the early 1850's. He attended Purdue University majoring in Agricultural Economics. Self employed Troy acts as the account manager for Beckman Properties and other family partnerships with holdings in farm and commercial properties. Many of these properties date back to the Beckman family in the pioneer days and have never known other owners.
Troy is married and has two great children, a son, Chris and daughter, Brooke. When not working, he is actively involved with other local groups including the St Anne's Parish Council and Knights of Columbus. His special interests include reading, traveling, sporting events, camping and fishing.
Dianne Bish, Roseville Public Library Team Leader

Dianne has been the Assistant Director of the Roseville Public Library for the past fifteen years. During that time, Roseville built a new branch library and participated in a joint-use arrangement with the local school district to provide a public library station in a new middle school facility. Updating the "ancient" library computer system was another of her projects. After the upcoming retirement of the Director, Dianne will become the library leader (title to be determined), and will help coordinate the merger of Roseville's Parks & Recreation and Library departments into one department.
A native of Michigan, Dianne earned her M.S.L.S. degree at Wayne State University and completed post-master's work at University of Michigan. Her prior professional positions include law librarian for a major Detroit law firm, legislative librarian at the Missouri State Library, reference librarian and documents specialist at Detroit Public Library, and director of the Novi (MI) Public Library. She's a member of CLA, Soroptimist, Toastmasters, and the Roseville Historical Society. She and her family reside in Roseville. Her personal goal is to finally write "the great American mystery!"

David has been the City Manager of Menlo Park since 2000. His previous positions include Community Development Director for the cities of Sunnyvale, CA and Nashua, NH. He received his MPA from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and his BS in Urban Planning from the University of Utah. David lives with his wife Carrie and son Alexander in Menlo Park.

Greg has BS and Master's degrees in Engineering and worked at FMC Corporation's Corporate Technology Center in Santa Clara in robotics, computer vision and other advanced technologies.
Since joining The Tech staff in 1994, Greg has managed many different aspects of the museum's operation, from Gallery Programs to Information Technology. Currently, he is the Vice President of Engineering and Technology. In addition to actively participating in the development of 250 new interactive exhibits, Greg lead a small team responsible for acquiring $32M worth of high-tech equipment donations for use in the facility. He also initiated The Tech Challenge, an exciting design contest for youthful engineers.
Pat Bunnell, Shasta County Library Team Member

Pat worked as the Administrative Secretary for the Shasta County Library for many years, and she continued to stay involved after she retired. She is currently serving on the Friends of Shasta County Libraries Board as the immediate Past President, and as the Secretary for the New Library Now! (NLN!) Board. NLN! is the organization that has solicited local funds and written the grant to apply for State Bond Act funds to build a new library. Pat's volunteer work at the library includes scheduling the Preschool and Toddler Story Times and helping to plan the Summer Reading Club. Pat is also involved in the Redding Branch of AAUW and the Shasta Service Guild. She lives in the historic mining town of Shasta, where the Guild is in the process of procuring land from BLM to build a park that will house mining artifacts, preserve the Indian heritage, and provide an area for the community. Pat and her husband have 5 sons and 8 grandchildren. She also enjoys quilting and gardening.

As a Children's Services Librarian, Christy is committed to providing excellent customer service to families in San Mateo. In addition to storytimes and community outreach, she is involved with the Branch Renovation project and Families for Literacy program. Before joining the SMPL Team in 2001, Christy managed a busy Children's Department at the Public Library of Charlotte, NC and participated in the development of both the Storyplace and Bookhive websites. She enjoys matching books with readers, bikram yoga and travel.
Skip Burson, Aquarium Consultant
Skip is a marine biologist and owner of California Aquarium Consultants. His aquarium eco-culture maintenance visits are featured programs at the Cerritos Library. He dives inside the aquarium and is wired for sound. Library customers are encouraged to ask questions as they watch; Skip responds to them from inside the aquarium.

When Anne was in the 7th grade she wrote to the American Library Association to inquire about educational requirements to become a librarian. Today she claims that her career choice was inevitable. Currently she is City Librarian at National City Public Library and is constantly planning new projects to bring improved library and literacy services to National City residents.
Anne has served on the local elementary school board for almost 16 years (obviously there are no term limits) and has recently been appointed to serve on the Universal Service Administrative Company Board of Directors. Anne has been active in the California Library Association and served as President in 1999.

Darrell is the board chairman for the Long Beach Public Library Foundation.
After 32 years of urology practice in Long Beach, he retired and wondered what to do besides learning to play golf. His four children were scattered to Oakland, Salt Lake City and Miami and there were no Sunday family dinners despite 7 grandchildren. His travels, with four children ages 5, 4, 2 and 1, included a term with the Peace Corps in Iran. He found local activity the answer to retirement, with continued participation in the Long Beach Symphony, and reading to the second grade at Edison school.

Carolyn is the Director of the Shasta County Library which includes the main library in Redding and branches in Anderson and Burney. A native of California, Carolyn received her BA in English from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and her Masters in Library Science from the University of Arizona. Carolyn worked as the Children's Librarian and Assistant Library Director at the Calexico Public Library until she moved to Redding in 1984 as a reference and cataloging librarian. In 1988 the library was closed, and she was one of two staff retained to maintain the collection. She was appointed Library Director when the library reopened in 1989. Since that time, library services have expanded from 21 hours per week to 61 hours per week and have been automated. Carolyn's career also includes several years in the purchasing field. Carolyn is a recipient of a Paul Harris Fellowship awarded by the Redding Rotary Club, and is a member of the American Library Association and the California Library Association. She likes to read and work puzzles and word games.
Jane A. Chambers, Daly City Library Team Member

Jane is the Assistant City Manager for Daly City; she recently relocated to the SF Bay Area from Minneapolis, MN, to take the position in October 2002. She grew up in Anaheim, California, earned an MPA Degree from UCLA, and began her local government career working for the City of Burbank.
Jane then moved to Northern California to work for the City of Chico. She has worked outside of local government for a university, a public health organization and in non-profit consulting work, and re-entered city management while living in Minnesota. Libraries have always been one of her favorite places to spend time. She is delighted to be working in Daly City, a community that actively supports its libraries, and she is looking forward to sharing in this important conference.
Patty Chan, Antioch Library Team Member

A children's librarian since 1975, she is also the Branch Librarian in
Antioch, part of the Contra Costa County Library System. She worked as a
member of the team that just submitted a Prop 14 application for funding a
new library in the rapidly growing city of Antioch. Active in various
organizations and the community, Patty was honored with the "Citizen of the
Year" award in 2002. She is committed to excellent customer service and
still finds her career challenging and rewarding. One of the highlights has
been winning the 1st place trophy marching in the 4th of July parade as the
Antioch Library Precision Book Truck Drill Team.
Patty grew up in the Bay Area with a background in Health Sciences and a MLS from UC Berkeley. She enjoys traveling, fitness, singing and telling punny library jokes. Her favorite proverb is "The great woman is she who does not lose her child's heart."
Ed Cheng, San Ramon Library Team Member

Ed is a structural engineer/project manager for the Clorox Company. From 1993 to 1999, he was employed by the City of Oakland and was involved with the building and restoration of seven libraries. Before that, he was a board member of the Friends of the Oakland Public Library and worked to establish stable fundraising such as a permanent Friends Bookstore. His fondest memories of those days were that his work helped the community and the librarians. Currently, as the chairperson of the San Ramon Library Advisory Commission, he is working with city/county staff and consultants on the design of a new library in concert with a performing arts center and children's museum.

Kristie's passion has always been for the public library as a institution of
lifelong learning and self-empowerment. Her career has been spent at Kern
County Library, principally in adult service positions. She spent a year at
Cornell University as the assistant head of the Main Graduate Library's
circulation desk, where undergrads and SUNY teaching staff had to have a
pretty darn good reason to be admitted to the library's closed stacks. She had
the power to admit or deny!
Kristie led Kern County Library's participation in the State Library's Partnership for Change (PFC) grant, cycle 2; 5 years of training and implementing, that shaped her philosophy of library service. The philosophies of PFC still loom large in all aspects of the planning Kern County Library services. As the Head of Community and Support Services, she has supervised teams applying for and implementing a variety of grant projects.

Donna is currently Chief of Branches at the San Francisco Public Library. She is responsible for the operation and services for 26 branch libraries located throughout the City. Before this she worked at the Oakland Public Library in several capacities, including branch library and bookmobile manager, Reference Librarian at the Main Library and Supervising Librarian. Donna is currently involved in the branch improvement program that includes 24 branch building projects.

Ann is the director of Solano County Library. A native Californian, she earned her BA in political science at UC Davis and her MLS at the University of Michigan. She began her career as a reference librarian for the Sacramento Public Library in 1973 before moving to Stockton to work as a branch manager for the Stockton San Joaquin County Public Library in 1978. In 1987, she became the head of public services for Solano County Library and was promoted to director in 1994.
Ann served on the California Library Association's Legislative Committee from 1998-2000 and as chair during the last two years of her term. During that time, she also served as statewide co-chair of the Proposition 14 library construction bond act campaign. Proposition 14 was approved by the voters in March 2000. That same year, Ann was named CLA Member of the Year.

Katy is currently the branch manager of Fair Oaks Library a suburban branch of the Sacramento Public Library System. Katy came to Sacramento only 8 months ago from Nampa Idaho where she had most recently held the position of Youth Services Supervisor and Co-Reference Manager. She used community assessment and strategic planning to obtain grants, start new programs, and build partnerships with the local school district and other community organizations. She received her BA in elementary education from Northwest Nazarene University and her MLS from Emporia State University. Katy's background in education so led to her interest in youth services and staff training. She chose Sacramento because it is a larger system poised on the brink of change and challenge both of which she finds energizing.
Erika DeMille, Mendocino County Library Team Leader

Erika has been the Director of the Mendocino County Library since 2000. She has spent twenty plus years as a librarian in academic, public and special libraries.
The Mendocino County Library is comprised of 5 libraries and a bookmobile serving a population of less than 85,000 in an area of 3,500 sq miles. What were once rural communities have become popular places for retirement and vacation with retirees insisting on their urban amenities. Providing quality recreational and cultural opportunities in our area is a challenge.
Erika feels that coming from an urban area in Southern California to Mendocino County's beautiful redwood forests, agricultural abundance and a tradition of fishing and ranching has been a positive and challenging experience.
Carolyn Denny, Riverside Public Library Team Leader

Carolyn serves as a Library Manager for the Riverside Public Library overseeing the
recently remodeled and expanded La Sierra Neighborhood Library, the Eastside
Cybrary, the Nichols Cybrary, and the Literacy Program. She received her Masters
in Library Science from San Jose State University. In 2002 she received the
Award for Excellence as a Public Librarian from the California Library Association.
Her article, "Redefining Librarianship" published in Public Libraries
(July/August 2000), illustrates the expanded and transformed roles that librarians
must adopt in the changing information environment. She has written several
successful grant applications including the LSTA grant that created the award-winning
Cybrary program in the Eastside neighborhood of Riverside.
Diane Duquette, Kern County Library Team Leader

Diane has served as Director of Libraries for Kern County Library (KCL) since 1987. Together with a dynamic and visionary management staff, Diane administers a main library, 25 branches and 3 bookmobiles. Under Diane's leadership, KCL has been awarded over 250 grant applications resulting in more than $24 million in grant awards, including construction grants for four new library branches with renowned regional art collections; she has overseen the construction of a modern 127,000 s/f new main library and six new branches varying in size from 6,000 to 16,300 s/f. In addition, she has overseen the development of high-tech operations including computer training labs and serves on the KCL Foundation's Art Committee, which developed one of the most noted California Fine Art Collections in the State. It's no wonder that the March, 1996 Countywide Customer Satisfaction Survey resulted in ratings of very good to excellent for overall services of the Kern County Library.
KCL has been awarded several awards including the "Award of Excellence in Public Library Management" in 2002 by the Urban Libraries Council/LSSI, a special "John Cotton Dana Public Relations" award in 1989 and an "All America City" award in 1990. In 2002, the local chapter of CEWAER, nominated Diane for "Woman of the Year."
Diane lives at Pine Mountain Club in Frazier Park, California with her husband, Tom. An avid fitness and health advocate, she enjoys hiking on the trails around their home and scaring bears out of her path! She is also a golf enthusiast, but declines to state her handicap.
Shelley Ekeroth, County of Los Angeles Public Library Team Leader

Shelley Ekeroth has been with the County of Los Angeles Public Library since 1990. She started off as a reference librarian, later becoming manager of one of the County's community libraries. Her interest in collection development led to a position as the Fiction Materials Evaluator, which she held for six years before her recent appointment as Collection Development Coordinator.

As part of the Cerritos Library Expansion Planning Team, Becky was responsible for developing an innovative staff training program. She worked closely with the architect and interior designer on the design of the public service and was also responsible for overseeing Collection Development, programming and many other public services activities.
In mid-January 2003, Becky retired and moved to Fort Bragg in northern California where she immediately became involved in organizing the research library at the Mendocino Botanical Garden. She plans to continue to be involved in public library activities and contribute what she can to helping others to imagine and create the library of the future.
Victoria Fong, Belvedere-Tiburon Library Team Leader

Victoria is a member of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library Agency Board of Trustees and a member of the statewide Library of California Board. She is also a director of the Peninsula Library Foundation (Belvedere-Tiburon), a member of the Council of Friends of the Bancroft Library at University of California, Berkeley, Board Community Advisors of the Buck Center for Research in Aging, and the Marin Charitable Association.
Victoria has been a special librarian with The Foundation Center, a national public information, non-profit special library in San Francisco, a law librarian for the Clark County Law Library in Las Vegas, Nevada and the San Francisco law firm of McCutchen, Doyle, Brown, and Enersen, and a public librarian for The Free Library of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her volunteer work with school libraries includes Marin Country Day School and the Branson School. She received a bachelor’s degree in history, and a Master in Library Science degree from the University of Michigan.
Shari Fournier-O'Leary, Conference Graphic Artist
Shari is a graphic designer/art director specializing in both print and web design. She has worked with library organizations including the Cerritos Library, Infopeople, lii.org and the Belvedere-Tiburon Library as well as major corporations such as Disney, Amgen and Bank of America. Shari also taught graphic design at Cal State Fullerton. She created the graphics for the Imagine It, Explore It, Create It! Conference.
Livier Franco, Camarena Memorial Library Team Member

During her high school and college years, Livier worked at the Camarena Library under many different school programs, until she earned her A.A. in Early Childhood Education. For the next 17 years she worked as a preschool teacher. Last year she found a wonderful job working as a Children's Services Coordinator at the Camarena Memorial Library.
Livier loves her job because she gets to work with all kinds of children, conducting everyday activities during the day as well as after school activities. She finds her job exciting because she gets to do a lot of research and planning for the different activities and get to be with the people she loves the most: children. She is married, has three sons and a wonderful husband.
Chris Gallas, Santa Maria Public Library Team Member

Chris was recruited for the Santa Maria Library Board of Trustees by
a hibiscus. She was photographing its blooms at City Hall in 1994 when she
spied a notice advertising a board opening. She has served ever since as the local library expanded its collections and services to a diverse population of customers. She inherited her love of reading and libraries from her grandfather, author of 23 books. In college, she spent many hours in the Bancroft Library at Berkeley, then earned an MA Ed. in Counseling and Guidance from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Chris and husband, Joe, have two grown children and one grandchild. When their daughter was diagnosed with autism 33 years ago, Chris again found the library a source of much needed information. She also serves the Santa Maria Community through Altrusa, Rotary, American Association of University Women, and local leadership programs. Her other interests are painting, photography, gardening, travel, writing and, of course, reading.
Gina Garbolino, Roseville Public Library Team Member

A native of the Netherlands and 34-year resident of Roseville, Gina was appointed to the Roseville City Council on March 14, 2001. She was elected Mayor Pro Tem on November 5, 2002 and will be sworn in as the Mayor of Roseville in late 2004.
Gina attended California State University at San Francisco and Sierra College. She currently holds the position of Vice President of Business Development for the Roseville Bank of Commerce. She has been involved with the Roseville Chamber as a member for over 18 years, including service as a Board Member and 1997 Chamber President. She was the recipient of the prestigious Athena Award in 1993 and serves as the Chair of Leadership Roseville. Her community involvement includes Board Member for the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Placer County for 6 years; 3 time President of Advocacy, Resources and Choices; Past Board Member for Roseville Art Center; and Advisory Board member for the Performing Arts of Roseville.
Gina has been married for 36 years to Judge James Garbolino with two married daughters and four grandchildren.
Joan Garrett, Belvedere-Tiburon Library Team Member

Joan has been the head of the Reference Department at the Belvedere-Tiburon Library since the new Library opened in 1997. Prior to that time she worked as a Technical Information Specialist at the Lawrence Livermore National Labs, and in interlibrary loans at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She received her MLIS from the University of Rhode Island, and is a transplanted New Englander, moving from Massachusetts to California in 1994.
Working in a wonderful public library has given her the opportunity to become a generalist: helping to build the collection, developing the web page, working with community volunteers, doing virtual reference, and helping to plan a possible addition to the library.
Joan spends her leisure time reading, ballroom and folk dancing, and hiking the beautiful trails of Marin County.
Bill Gegg, Antioch Library Team Member

Bill is Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Antioch, California and has worked for the City for almost 15 years in Building, Planning, Information Systems and Administration. He is part of the City of Antioch Library Team that submitted an application for 2nd Round funding from the 2000 Library Bond Act. "I have worked on a lot of projects over the past 10 years but the library grant application has been the most rewarding. One of those incredible efforts when everyone on the project team was focused on one goal, a gorgeous, new library serving Antioch."
Bill is a former Golden Bear, having received his undergraduate degree from U.C. Berkeley in Biology. He also has a teaching credential and a Masters in Business Administration. He has been married for 27 years, has two daughters 11 and 13 years old, and coaches both of them on the same fast pitch softball team.
Bill enjoys 60's automobiles, sports, photography, reading, wood working, metal working and exploring with his family. He is still trying to take the perfect picture and complete the perfect weld.

Joyce is Branch Manager at San Ramon, one of 23 Contra Costa County Library branches. Since 1991, she has developed a community-oriented library, jointly funded by the county and city and open seven days a week. Chosen as the only California site for two Smithsonian jazz exhibits, the library also hosted a Poets in Person series, and created a jazz collection that loans items nationally as well as locally.
Joyce has worked in libraries since her days as a high school shelver. Her M.L.S. (1968) is from Rutgers, when library degrees still had "library" in them, students wrote catalog cards by hand, and high-tech was new filmstrip projectors that advanced the film automatically. During the last 35 years, she has been children's librarian or branch manager around the U.S. and is now planning two new library buildings.

The Deputy Director of County Library Services at Marin County Free Library, Gail has worked in libraries since receiving her MLS in 1971. Richard is the Library Bond Act Manager for the California State Library's Office of Library Construction where he is currently managing $350 million of state bond funds for public library construction. He joined the California State Library in January of 1990 as the Library Bond Act Manager for the original 1988 Library Bond Act. Before then, he was the Library Construction Coordinator for the Georgia State Library for 12 years where he successfully managed an annual state grants-in-aid program for constructing public library facilities.
Richard is the author of two books: Financing Public Library Buildings and Winning Library Referenda Campaigns and over 20 professional journal articles in the area of library facility planning and library ballot measures. He is also the developer of Libris Design, a library facility planning database, that can be used by public libraries to assist with the development of their library building programs and project cost estimates.

In May 2001, Carrie joined the Cerritos Library staff. Carrie's day-to-day

Patricia is currently the Facility Manager for San Bernardino County Library. Her first position in California was the SIRCULS Coordinator for San Bernardino, Riverside and Inyo Counties. Attracted by the bright lights and the big city, she moved to Los Angeles and worked for 15 years with Los Angeles Public Library.
After a one year hiatus in Ft. Bragg, CA, she accepted a position as part of the management team for San Bernardino County Library. Marlys is currently the Vice Chairperson of the Salinas Library Commission. Her library career began as a page at the El Monte branch of the County of Los Angeles Public Library, where she earned 35¢ per hour in 1942. Other things happened—working as a typist, as assistant policewoman, a social worker, and a mother. She did get back to libraries, getting her MLS at the University of Washington. She retired in 1985 after 18 years spent mostly in community college libraries.

For the past 21 years, Waynn has worked for the City of Cerritos as Library Director. He has worked for a variety of California library agencies: Ontario City Library, Pomona Public Library, Pasadena Public Library, and the Metropolitan Cooperative Library System.
In 1975 he received his Masters in Library Science from California State University, Fullerton; his Bachelors of Art is in Public Administration/Political Science from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California.
He has acted as a library-building consultant, technology consultant, and project manager on several projects. In 1984-87, he was the Project Manager for the Cerritos Public Library expansion project that received the American Library Association/American Institute of Architects Award of Excellence in 1989. For the next five years, he was the Assistant Project Manager for the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts building project. Most recently, he spent six years in a collaborative effort conceptualizing, designing, and constructing the first "Experience Library"--the new Cerritos Library.
Waynn was featured as a crusader in Library Journal's 2003 Movers and Shakers issue; he feels that, "In designing the new Cerritos Library, my team and I dispensed with our ideas about existing library models and started thinking about what motivates the people in our community. We changed our focus from books, services, programming, etc. to the user's experience--particularly the user's learning experience--as the library's primary product."

Thad's library career began as a result of his attendance at a Bob Dylan
concert at the Inglewood Forum. He found a classified ad for a library clerk

Library and swim in the ocean during his lunch break. What a life and

Helen is currently the South Novato Library Branch Manager. She worked at Consumnes River College, Sacramento, in the late 1970's as the
evening Reference Librarian for one year and then worked as a sub for the
City/County Library system while she prepared to marry. She moved to Sausalito and discovered that the library field was still crowded with people looking for positions. Chevron's Corporate Library was a wonderful place to work in San Francisco. She left when her second child was born. The opportunity to work at the neighborhood elementary/middle school library opened three years later for the librarian's maternity leave. When that ended, Helen started working at the Fairfax Regional Library as Reference and Children's Librarian and then added the Civic Center and Novato Regional Libraries. Her next position was as the West Marin Children's Librarian and when that was changed to include other duties, she accepted the Library Branch Manager position to establish the South Novato Library in 1998.

John is the Community Services Division Manager for the City of San Ramon. Although only in his current position for just 8 short months, John has been involved in community and recreation services for more than 16 years. Originally from England, John moved to the U.S. and Michigan in the summer of 1988 as part of a YMCA international exchange program, designed to develop cultural and social exchange. Following several years of work as a counselor at a camp for youth at risk, John attended Central Michigan University, where he earned a BS in Therapeutic Recreation and Psychology. John then went on to Michigan State University where he earned his MS in Park, Recreation & Tourism Resources/Urban Studies. As Vice Chairman and Principal Creative Executive, Marty provides leadership for the creative staff at Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), the Disney organization responsible for the master planning, creation and expansion of the company's theme parks, resorts and other Disney initiatives. Marty has led WDI's Creative Development since 1974, including the creation of Epcot. As Vice Chairman he has provided creative direction for a new generation of Disney theme parks, including Disney's California Adventure, Tokyo DisneySea, Walt Disney Studios at Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland, now under construction for a 2005/2006 opening.
Marty began his Disney career at Disneyland, one month before the park opened in 1955. For 10 years, he wrote personal material for Walt Disney for use in films, TV and annual reports.
Marty was one of the founders of the Ryman Program for Young Artists, a project of the Ryman-Carroll Foundation, for which Marty serves as President. Prior to her career with the Santa Cruz City County Library, she wore two hats at a private non-profit Energy Conservation Program as Assistant Program Manager and Crew Chief for 12 years. Valerie is the Director of the South San Francisco Public Library. She received her M.L.S. from Columbia University. She started off her library life in the corporate world where she set up and supervised a systems library for the American Express Corporation in New York City, before moving to Paris, France for 2 years, where she strolled the City, traveled in France and beyond and did a little librarian freelance work. After returning home in 1982, she began work at the San Francisco Public Library. In 1989, Valerie came to South San Francisco as Branch Manager. From 1991 to 1996 she was Head of Reference at the Main Library and appointed Library Director. Kevin Starr, the seventh State Librarian of California since the beginning of the 20th century, was born in San Francisco in 1940. After graduation from the University of San Francisco in 1962, Starr served two years as a lieutenant in a tank battalion in Germany. Upon release from the service, Starr entered Harvard University where he took his MA degree in 1965 and his PhD in 1969 in American Literature. He also holds the Master of Library Science degree from UC Berkeley and has done post-doctoral work at the Graduate Theological Union. Starr has served as Allston Burr Senior Tutor in Eliot House at Harvard, executive assistant to the Mayor of San Francisco, the City Librarian of San Francisco, and a daily columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. He currently holds the rank of University Professor at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
The author of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, Starr has written nine books, six of which are part of his Americans and the California Dream series. His writing has won him a Guggenheim Fellowship, membership in the Society of American Historians, and the Gold Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California.

Lael has been a Librarian with Alameda County Library for 17 years. She is currently the coordinator of a program called Hot Wheels, a preschool and childcare program. She uses the Bookmobile to visit 47 sites monthly to bring a story time and library experience to young children and try to get them excited about reading. Lael has lived and traveled in a variety of places around the world. She speaks Spanish and uses it daily; she is also in charge of ordering the Spanish materials for the Alameda County Library system.
Lael’s husband is a wine buyer and they have two wonderful sons, 19 and 15 years of age. She teaches Sunday school to fourth graders each week, and cheers on her baseball playing son and two Little League umpires in her spare time.
