Accessible Electronic Services for People with Disabilities
A library without walls... Information for everyone at any time... So we think of electronic information resources and other uses of computer technology in libraries. Yet equal access to technology is not always a reality for people with disabilities. Ten percent of Americans have substantially limiting long-term disabilities that may interfere with using a computer, and many others may have temporary or less significant disabilities. Legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act mandates library accessibility; increasing librarians' knowledge of how to provide quality service will fuel library accessibility.
Workshop Description: In
this discussion-based workshop,
participants will learn about common
disabilities, be introduced to the issues
involved in access to computers, see
examples of the adaptive technology
available, and explore the access issues
affecting their own libraries.
Highlights: Through lecture, demonstrations, discussions, and exercises, this workshop will provide:
- Overview of the needs of patrons with disabilities
- Demonstrations of adaptive technology
- Strategies for getting the most "bang for the buck" in acquiring adaptive equipment
- Guidelines for establishing appropriate policies for implementing access
- Analysis of Web sites for accessibility
- Exercises to jump-start ideas for implementing access in your library
