Library LAN Management

As libraries offer more and more electronic resources, librarians are forced to deal with that which was once the sole, mysterious domain of a "techie" -- the Local Area Network (LAN). Librarians familiar with networking terms, equipment, and troubleshooting techniques can more easily deal with daily LAN headaches such as printing problems or workstation logons. In addition, administrators will find planning for the future easier when they understand the technology of today.

Workshop Description: This all-day workshop starts with an in-depth discussion of what a network does, moves on to standard network equipment and terminology, then takes a brief look at networking protocols such as TCP/IP. The afternoon introduces some of the common network operating systems such as Novell NetWare and Microsoft Windows NT, covers the vital topic of troubleshooting, and concludes with network management and analysis.
