Librarians' Internet Toolkit for Kids
Kids love to go online. They use the Internet for chatting, e-mailing and playing games. Kids want information in a hurry, but they often flounder when trying to find specific information. They think they know everything about the Internet, but really do not know how to distinguish between sites with quality information vs. sites with little substance or authority. Librarians pride themselves on their ability to provide just the right source for their patrons. They know how to do this in the print world, but finding the appropriate resource from the Internet can be challenging.
Workshop Description: In this workshop, you will develop a repertoire of "tools" to identify reliable and appropriate Web sites for school age kids. Learn how to hone your skills in using search engines; identify subject directories featuring sites kids will find useful. Review listservs and see how they add to your Internet toolkit. Explore sites featuring one theme or subject. Course materials will include sample "cheat" sheets for students to use for evaluating Web sites, using search engines, and doing research.
Highlights: Using hands-on exercises, discussion and handouts, this workshop will cover the following topics:
- Search engines and how to use them effectively.
- Subject directories useful for kids.
- Locating online tutorials, reference materials and primary source material.
- Evaluating web sites for kids.
- Comparing homework and research sites.
- Online tools for research papers.
- Age-appropriate content sites.
- Kid-oriented listservs.
