Network Security 101

How confident are you that your library network is secure? This workshop will cover the vital security issues and techniques that are increasingly important to every library:

  • How to prevent or fend off attacks on workstations and networks
  • Effective use of anti-virus software;
  • How to exploit existing security features within your windows operating system software, including setting policies and configurations that can help make workstations and servers more secure; and
  • Security appliances (firewalls) and their features and benefits
  • Methods for managing security in ways that facilitate Z39.50 access to integrated library systems for participation in regional catalogs

Whether you're a librarian who wants to be sure that security has been properly addressed at your institution, an integrated library system manager who is now expected to handle network security as well, or a serious techie who wants an update on the latest security tools and techniques as they relate to libraries, this course is for you.

Workshop description: The Network Security Workshop will combine introductory and intermediate lecture, hands-on exercises and interactive group problem-solving to teach attendees how to prevent unwarranted and destructive access to library networks and workstations. The workshop will include real time video displays of security configurations and direct connection to a firewall to demonstrate its use and operations and to test student solutions.

Highlights: Topics to be covered include:

  • Network security: best practices, policies, passwords and configurations
  • Software solutions for anti-virus and firewalls
  • Hardware solutions and security appliances
  • Firewalls: features and benefits, Virtual Private Networks, filtering, Network Address Translation, and rules
  • Library-specific security concerns: Z39.50, DMZ ports, and Web servers

Workshop materials: Workshop attendees will receive printed handouts of all presentation and display screens, a glossary of terms, and a resource guide including a bibliography and web guide of print and digital materials and sites offering resources for network security. You will also receive specific product information, including costs, for proven security-enhancing software and hardware.

Who should attend: The workshop will provide a mix of information regarding management and technical decision-making, useful for:

  • Library technology managers and technology operators.
