Cathie Scalice

Cathie Scalice is in charge of Youth Services at Daly City Public Library. She has been actively using computers since her first introduction to Eliza - an early computer model of artificial intelligence, in the mid-70's at Brigham Young University's library school. Cathie has been using computers and other tech gadgets for over 25 years. In her current job she gets to get kids excited about reading. One of her favorite things is using a puppet who turns into a TV set while reciting the Shel Silverstein poem "Jimmy Jet and his TV set. She has a collection of over 60 puppets she uses in her class visits (including 6 different dragons) and is always on the lookout for more. She has taught teachers to surf the net and done presentations on new books for teachers and school librarians and aides. Cathie was able to spend a week at the Gates Foundation in Seattle for technical training (where she learned to lock herself out of a server). In her spare time she helps keep the library computers up and running, and more recently she was part of the committee charged with a complete redesign of the Peninsula Library System's web pages. She teaches introductory classes for the public on Internet and Computers.

Cathie has a small web page business, Coastside Web Design, maintains her librarian web page at librarianontheloose.org where she tells people how to talk with librarians, is an avid amateur photographer specializing in photos of storytellers, and loves spending time in an ocean kayak or biking on the bluffs near her Half Moon Bay home when she isn't playing an interactive online game.

Cathie has taught 7 classes in 2002.
