Connie Lawthers

I'm a Microcomputer Specialist with the City of Chula Vista, responsible for the Library's network of over 200 PCs and Macintoshes, complete with Microsoft NT 4.0 and Novell NetWare 4.11 servers, an Exchange (email) server, a DNS server and a firewall. "Responsible" in this case means doing everything from arranging for computer purchases to ensuring that those old dinosaur 486s get hauled away, with network administration and troubleshooting thrown in to liven things up. If this sounds like a lot, it is, but it's never boring, and there's always something new to learn each day. And once in a while (when no one's looking) I even get to interact with the patrons and help them get back to their Hotmail accounts from www2.bluemountain.com.

Before entering the world of computers full time I was a Librarian for the Chula Vista Public Library, with my time split between the Automated Services division and the Public Services (Reference) division. And before that, I taught music at San Diego City College and UCSD. I still get to teach once in a while, teaching classes on Windows and Microsoft Word for city employees; I also write an occasional column on using Word for the city's employee newsletter.

When I'm not at work going slightly crazy, I relax by singing with the Early Music Ensemble of San Diego, cataloging videos and other materials for the Sadler Resource Center of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, gardening, ensuring that my teenage son will be an upstanding citizen one day, and troubleshooting my husband's scanner. Oh - and once in a while (when no one's looking) I help my mother-in-law get back to her Hotmail account from www2.bluemountain.com.
