Library Computing without Wires
An Infopeople Webinar
Presenter: Thomas Edelblute
Can our library become a WiFi hot spot? Should it? This webcast will bring you up to speed on the latest developments in wireless technology and how wireless is creating opportunities and new choices for libraries.
Many users expect to use their own laptops in the library. But turning your library into a hot spot carries certain risks. We'll discuss some of the important security considerations for providing this service, including standards such as WPA and options for authenticating laptop-carrying users to your library network.
Wireless networks can save money in cabling and construction, provide flexibility in locating workstations, and allow roving staff to use handheld devices throughout the library. We will talk about all these possibilities, including the pros and cons.
We'll also discuss how bookmobile operations are starting to take advantage of the wireless technology utilized by next-generation cellphones and how you might be able to use wireless technology in place of more expensive phone company leased lines.
Webinars are free of charge and registration is only done on the day of the event on the WebEx server. No passwords are required.
