Libraries Offering Books on iPod

Thomas Ford Memorial Library (Illinois)
The Thomas Ford Memorial Library in
Western Springs, Illinois is also offering to load audio books on their users’ iPods.  They also have purchased iPods to lend out with audio books pre-loaded.

China.  Good source for Chinese language e-books published in China.  This site is all in Chinese.

Offers e-books on technology and business related topics. 

ebrary offers a broad selection of e-books which use its own proprietary reader.



EBSCO resells e-book services from Springer, Taylor and Francis, Wiley, and the Pan American Health Organization. 

Gale Virtual Reference Library


Gale offers many of its reference titles in electronic format.  One difference between these “e-books” and their reference databases is that the e-books are not updated.

Knovel Library


Knovel offers science and engineering titles with interactive tables and other unique features.

MyiLibrary (Coutts)


MyiLibrary is the e-book platform offered by Coutts publishing.  They have recently released a public library package in addition to their focus on science, technology, medicine, and intergovernmental publications. 



Netlibrary offers the largest selection of e-book titles.  They also offer downloadable audio books from Recorded Books including the Pimsleur language series.  And they have announced that they will soon be selling downloadable audio from Books on Tape and Blackstone.

OverDrive Digital Library Reserve


OverDrive supports library digital collections with its technology, which was originally developed for retailers.  OverDrive has recently expanded the formats offered by adding downloadable music and video in addition to the Adobe and Mobipocket e-books as well as downloadable audio books.  The propoprietary OverDrive Media Console allows for downloading audio in CD-length parts and burning to CD where permitted by publishers.

ProQuest Safari Books Online


ProQuest is the library agent for Safari online books on technology and business topics.  Safari features O’Reilly technology titles and it is the only source for this valuable e-content.



TumbleBooks offers three products: TumbleBookLibrary, talking animated picture stories for grades K-4; TumbleReadables, adjustable font e-books; TumbleTalkingBooks, streaming audio books.  All three use Flash technology for streaming, not downloadable, content.  The picture stories are the most popular.

eBook Locator – Powered by OverDrive
A site provided by OverDrive where anyone can search the OverDrive catalog for e-books e-audio and e-video that is available from both retail and library sites.

An interesting example of a site that uses an OverDrive site as a single gateway to downloadable audio books, music, video and Netlibrary e-books.

San Francisco Public Library 


A good example of a site that offers a variety of e-books and downloadable audio books.  The library has created valuable supporting documentation to go with these services.
