Prepare to document your library's value

The initial health insurance open enrollment period, a key component of the Affordable Care Act, provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the meaningful role public libraries serve in their communities. By documenting the work your public library undertakes on behalf of assisting its community in connecting to the information and access points they need related to the Affordable Care Act, you can build the profile of public libraries in general as well as become more visible as a local community resource.

Infopeople rolls out staff help on Affordable Care Act

On September 9, Infopeople presented a well attended webinar to kick off efforts to bring California library staff information about the Affordable Care Act and and assistance in identifying the role of public libraries in the enrollment process scheduled to open on 1 October. If you weren't able to attend the webinar live, be assured that, like all Infopeople webinars, it was archived.

The Power of Naming

Almost all of us of a certain age retain some vestige of memory about how we thought and felt about the cultural shift from the tripartate choice among Mr./Mrs./Miss to a slate in which Mr.'s female correlative of "Ms."  Whether it was immediately agreeable, or the answer to a personal and even long held political belief, or vaguely uncomfortable, or even disagreeable in its break with tradition, we learned that a simple change in moniker could--and did and still does--provide for allowances of perceptions unavailable when the term didn't exist or existed only "out there somewhere else unre

Is Your Library a 211 Hub?

We're Home from the Conference: Now What?

We learned a lot, networked happily, made discoveries that tickle our imaginations. The conference has ended, insofar as the scheduled programs have run their course, the exhibits have shuttered, and we've probably done some amount of traveling to get home, or on to the next location on our personal calendars.

Master Speaker Jonathan Reichental

On Sunday, during the coming weekend's 114th California Library Association conference, you get an extra hour sleep (we revert to "standard" time from daylight saving) and the opportunity to hear master speaker Dr. Jonathan Reichental, at 2 pm. Dr. Reichental brings to California librarians that enriching mix of public and private experience, from the world of business and from that of government.

Apps for Librarian Productivity

Caveat! This post isn't intended as technical review, but one busy librarian's experience!

A few days ago, I received another in a growing line of requests for a list of iPad apps that I find most useful in my workaday life. While the list does, of course, go through the necessary evolution that is part of contemporary tech, maybe sharing a current snapshot list here is in order.
