In cooperation with The California Digital Library (CDL) and the California State Library LSTA Grants Program (CSL), Infopeople presents a three course, full-day digitization workshop series for representatives from libraries that received a FY2005/2006 LSTA 6-LHDRP grant. (A fourth course in the series is to be offered in 2006.)

Attendance at sessions at either Northern or Southern California locations is mandatory for at least one digitization project manager/lead from each library that will be overseeing projects: a second, technical services lead staff member is also encouraged to attend.

This project is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

Workshop Descriptions:

Digitization Project Management
Workshop Instructor: Geri Bunker Ingram
This workshop will provide a general overview of all aspects of managing a digitization project, addressing issues that managers face as they implement their first digitization project. Topics covered include planning and policies, resource and staffing considerations, selecting projects and materials, process and workflow, digitization strategies (in-house or vendor), project sustainability, and marketing. Note: Participants are encouraged to bring any local strategic planning documents and grant descriptions that are appropriate.

Digital Image Scanning
Workshop Instructor: Geri Bunker Ingram
This workshop, designed for non-technical project staff, provides an overview of the digitization process with special emphasis on techniques and standards that must be employed when reformatting cultural heritage collections. Students will be introduced to the California Digital Library's imaging guidelines as a baseline standard for implementation. Topics covered include: the scanning process, metadata and imaging standards, system architecture and integration, hardware and software selection, interface design, quality control, and project assessment. Note: though this is not a hands-on scanning session, participants may choose to bring a small selection of materials for discussion, and handheld calculators to use for in-class exercises.

Copyright Issues for Digitization Projects
Workshop Instructor: Mary Minow
This workshop will introduce general issues pertaining to the selection of materials for digitization, and copyright issues. Topics covered: introduction to basic copyright law and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, including "fair use" and "public domain" issues; methods for assessing copyright status of materials; print/analog materials vs. digital materials; risk tolerance and management; capturing rights information in digital object metadata; and developing an institutional policy and rights management framework.
