Since its launch in 2008, Get Involved: Powered by Your Library has offered two training institutes building new capacities for volunteer engagement in 50 library jurisdictions throughout California. These institutes, in May 2009 (San Francisco) and February 2010 (Irvine), provided practical tools and knowledge wrapped in a collegial, inspiring learning environment to help libraries expand their engagement of high-skilled volunteers -- especially midlife adults ages 50+ and the generations that follow.
We have captured all unduplicated programs from the two institutes and organized them so that your library staff can view individual program segments alone or in a team and profit from the inspiration and information about skilled volunteer engagement.
Highlights included:
- Carla Lehn, California State Library shares the vision of Get Involved and accomplishments to date.
- Facilitation and training by Jill Friedman Fixler, author of Boomer Volunteer Engagement: Collaborate Today, Thrive Tomorrow, and her associate Jennifer Rackow.
- Karen Baker, California’s Secretary of Service and Volunteering (California Volunteers) re-imagines service in California and nationally.
- John Gomperts, president of Civic Ventures, describes this unprecedented era of service and volunteerism in America and encourages library leaders to tap into the "experience dividend" that people at midlife have to offer.
- Greg Baldwin, president of VolunteerMatch, reflects on VolunteerMatch’s partnership with Californa Public Libraries, the branded Get Involved website, and future opportunities for service in public libraries. His colleague, Jennifer Bennett, provides training in best practices in on-line recruitment of skilled volunteers and tips on how to get the most out of the VolunteerMatch suite of services.
- Library leaders Ed Kieczykowski (San Bernardino County) Kary Bloom (San Jose) and Rachel Delgadillo (Roseville) join project consultant Stephen Ristau in a discussion about engaging union and library staff in these efforts.
- Civic Ventures' 2007 Purpose Prize winner Gary Maxworthy inspires with his encore story transitioning from his food industry business to work building a distribution network moving excess farm produce to local food banks across California.
- Six pilot libraries that pioneered new practices in volunteer engagement demonstrate the results of nearly five months of training and technical assistance they received at the project’s outset.
- Mission Viejo Public Library team shares how they successfully recruited highly-skilled and motivated event planners, exceeded expectations in their first annual Reader’s Festival and, in the process transformed their engagement with and support from the public.
