Originally from Puerto Rico, Sylmarí Burgos-Ramírez graduated from the School of Information Sciences and Technologies at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Her training as a librarian has been around public and school libraries with tween and young adult populations. She has worked in various public and school libraries in Puerto Rico, Boston, MA, and Denver, CO where she has focused on research and development of programs for Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities.
Currently, she serves as the Director of the Buchanan Army Base Community Library where she conducts and develops bilingual programming and collection development for the community. Previously, she worked as a school librarian at Saint John's School Puerto Rico and Assistant Professor at the University of Denver, where she developed the Privilege and Equity in Information Sciences course. She also serves as the President of the Puerto Rico Library Association and Member of the Board of Directors of the Mayaguez Youth Library.
In the past, she served as Reforma Colorado Vice-President and Conference Chair and has presented at various conferences such as JCLC, ASIS&T, Reforma Colorado and ALISE on issues related to diversity and information needs of vulnerable communities.
