Madeleine Charney’s experience of burnout in her library career led her to make a major course correction in 2001 (while her journey continues to unfold). To help counter the burnout and complement her academic work, she dove into training to become certified as a master gardener, Reiki master, labyrinth facilitator, Koru Mindfulness teacher and nature therapy guide. Starting her library career with an MLS from the University of Rhode Island, she added an MA in Sustainable Landscape Planning and Design from the Conway School of Landscape Design. In her current position at the W.E.B. Du Bois Library at the University of Massachusetts, she offers research support for the departments of architecture, landscape architecture, regional planning, agriculture and sustainability across the curriculum. Her fierce love of Earth and her teenage son are major forces behind her climate change activism which she weaves into campus committee and professional association work.
