An Infopeople Online Learning Course

Dates: Tuesday, June 4, 2013 – Monday, Juy 1, 2013

Fee: $75 for those in the California library community and Infopeople Partners, $150 for all others (about payment)

Do you want to be able to provide children, tweens, and teens at your library with great suggestions for recreational reading?

This online course will help you to:

  • Use effective readers' advisory interview questions
  • Discover trends in books for young people, including graphic novels and popular series
  • Explore nonfiction for youth that is both popular and fits the new Common Core Curriculum standards
  • Try out easy-to-use websites and databases
  • Use free online tools to keep track of books you have read
  • Get updated on reading apps, e-books for youth, and other online reading
  • Learn booktalking and other techniques that "sell" books to young readers

You’ll be able to help parents, caregivers, and teachers find books to read aloud, help beginning readers find books they can enjoy, and learn ways to interact with tweens (ages 9 to 12) and teens so they listen to your reading recommendations. After this course, you will feel confident about recommending books to youth and have lots of resources at your fingertips.

Course Description: This four-week online learning course will provide information on books for children, tweens, and teens, including picture books, easy readers, transitional fiction, genre novels, young adult novels, graphic novels, and popular nonfiction. Through readings, discussions, and resources, you will learn methods to determine what a young person might like to read, and how to recommend, "sell" and market books. You will have opportunities to develop booklists, explore websites, and write and record a booktalk. The instructor will provide tools, templates, cheat sheets, and a resource guide, as well as practical, useful tips that can be applied immediately.

There will be several optional online meetings during the course. During these online meetings, you’ll be able to share ideas and questions and to connect and explore the material further in a friendly, convivial way. Those who cannot participate in person can listen to the archived recording of the meetings.

Preliminary Course Outline: Using an Internet connection and web browser, you will log in to the Infopeople online learning site and complete the following learning modules:

  • Week 1: Introduction to Readers' Advisory, Books for Young Children
    • Overview of readers' advisory including what interview questions to ask
    • Helping parents, teachers, and caregivers find books to read aloud
    • Helping beginning/emergent readers find books on their grade levels
    • Chapter books for the “transitional” reader moving up from beginning readers
    • Overview of apps and online reading options such as TumbleBooks
  • Week 2: Genre Fiction and Nonfiction for ages 9-12
    • Genre novels for tweens
    • Trendy/popular books and award-winners
    • Nonfiction for recreational reading and the Common Core Curriculum
    • Helping boys find books they enjoy so they will continue to read for fun
  • Week 3: Books for Teens
    • Novels, graphic novels, and Urban/Street Fiction for teens
    • Ways teens share book recommendations with each other
    • Finding “read-alikes” for popular tween and teen books
    • Censorship and book challenges
  • Week 4: Marketing Books to Children, Tweens, and Teens
    • Using Web 2.0 tools to keep a database of what you read (Goodreads, Library Thing, Shelfari)
    • Using interactive websites and databases to find books to recommend
    • Ebooks and other online reading options
    • Booktalks, in-person and using social media, YouTube, or your library’s website
    • Books relating to the 2013 Summer Reading Program theme

Time Required: To complete this course, you can expect to spend 2½ hours per week, for a total of 10 course hours. Each week’s module contains readings, discussions, and assignment options. You can choose the options most relevant to your work and interests. Although you can work on each module at your own pace, at any hour of the day or night, it is recommended that you complete each week’s work within that week to stay in sync with other learners.

Who Should Take This Course: Public or school library staff who want to be able to recommend reading to a wide age range of young people.

Course Start: This online learning course starts on Tuesday, June 4, 2013.

After the official end date for the course, the instructor will be available for limited consultation and support for two more weeks, and the course material will stay up for an additional two weeks after that. These extra weeks give those who have fallen behind time to work independently to complete the course.
