PLEASE NOTE: Due to grant funding requirements, this course is open to California library staff ONLY.

  • Would you like to use data to better understand how patrons use the library’s collections?
  • Do you want to make collection development decisions that are supported by evidence and analysis?
  • Are you interested in making smarter decisions about what you purchase for your library system?

In this course, learners will follow a two-part assessment process that uses data from their own collections to make decisions about developing and maintaining those collections. In the first part of the course, you will learn about the value of assessment and will then gather data about your collection. In the second part of the course, you will analyze the data to discover correlations, gaining skills and insights that will help in planning and decision-making.

Course Description: Through a combination of pre-recorded videos, readings, independent assignments, and online discussions, you’ll discover how to use data for collection development. You will have opportunities to apply the concepts and skills to your own collection and data.

Course Outline: When you log in to the Infopeople online learning site, you will see weekly modules with these topics:

  • • Week 1: Understanding and Gathering Collection Data
    • o Explain the benefits of the collection assessment process
    • o Describe the difference between qualitative and quantitative data and how each might be used in assessment
    • o Identify areas of the collection in need of assessment
  • • Week 2: Comparing and Analyzing Collection Data
    • o Design a data gathering spreadsheet for each collection area
    • o Compare collection areas for further assessment
    • o Assess what actions might change collection outcomes in the future

Time Required: To complete this course, you can expect to spend 2 ½ hours per week, for a total of five course hours. Each week's module contains an online meeting, readings, and various options for assignments and discussions. You can choose the options most relevant to your work and interests. Although you can work on each module at your own pace, at any hour of the day or night, it is recommended that you complete each week's work within that week to stay in sync with other learners.

Who Should Take This Course: Public librarians in California who have collection development responsibilities.
