Catherine McHugh's course "Emotional Intelligence in the Library Workplace" was a big success and many learners expressed a desire for MORE! In response to that demand, Catherine is offering a Part Two, which will go even deeper into some of the topics that were covered in the first course. New relevant topics will also be introduced. As you know from the first course, when people "show up" in an emotionally intelligent manner, customers are better served, the library workplace is more productive and harmonious, and employees experience greater satisfaction. Emotional intelligence, aka "the other kind of intelligence," is fundamental to constructively managing our own emotions and fostering positive and productive interactions with co-workers and customers.
Emotionally intelligent people recognize and manage their own emotions and understand how their emotions affect people around them. In addition to self-understanding, socially intelligent people empathize with others and use appropriate interpersonal skills to effectively manage relationships. This course, designed for learners who completed "Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace," builds on the 4-pillar Emotional Intelligence model and will deepen learners' self-management, positive contagion, and empathy skills. In addition, learners will understand the human and social dynamics that can interfere with constructive interpersonal interactions and develop practical skills and practices to more productively manage and improve library workplace relationships.
Course Description: This four-week online course will utilize readings, examples, resources and an online meeting to help you develop a deeper understanding of emotional intelligence and put it into practice. You will be able to apply the concepts and techniques immediately to your own library and community. As part of the course, you will be encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions with others.
Course Outline: When you log in to the Infopeople online learning site, you will see weekly modules with these topics:
- Week 1: What is Social Intelligence (and how is it demonstrated)?
- The Social Intelligence pillars (social awareness and relationship management) of the 4-pillar Emotional Intelligence model
- How unmanaged intense negative affects (particularly shame and anger) can challenge communication and damage relationships
- Week 2: Shame and Its Transformative Potential
- A description of shame affect and its tell-tale physical clues
- How shame cannot be avoided or prevented
- Difference between destructive and constructive shame
- The value of shame & its transformative potential
- Week 3: Cultivating Empathic Intelligence
- The Empathy Spectrum
- "Meeting folks where they're at" as "Both / And" thinking
- Holding others accountable while being empathic
- Week 4: Managing Relationships from a Position of Positive Intent
- The Ladder of Inference and current and future interactions with others in the workplace
- Strategies for fostering constructive interactions and productive relationships with co-workers and customers
Time Required: To complete this course, you can expect to spend 2 ½ hours per week, for a total of ten course hours. Each week's module contains readings and various options for assignments and discussions. You can choose the options most relevant to your work and interests. Although you can work on each module at your own pace, at any hour of the day or night, it is recommended that you complete each week's work within that week to stay in sync with other learners.

Learner Requirements: Emotional Intelligence in the Library Workplace (or special arrangement)
After the official end date for the course, the instructor will be available for limited consultation and support for two more weeks, and the course material will stay up for an additional two weeks after that. These extra weeks give those who have fallen behind time to work independently to complete the course.
